Girls Inc. of the Pacific Northwest inspires all girls to be strong, smart and bold, so it was a real treat to help write a script for their recent Power of the Purse fundraising event. The Power of the Purse pairs women and men of influence in our community with talented local designers to craft one-of-a-kind purses, auctioned off to the highest bidder to bring proceeds to the empowering work of Girls Inc. programs. The following scripts that I wrote were spoken aloud during the auction to inform the audience and pique the interest of potential bidders.
Thank you to Cindy Thompson Events for inviting me to be a small part of this fantastic organization.
As the CEO of Banfield Pet Hospital, Brian Garish is dedicated to making a better world for pets and their lucky humans, empowering his team to learn, grow, and thrive. So when he and THOR designed this beautiful bag, they didn’t fur-get to respect animals, using 100% ethically-sourced crocodile back leather. Responsibility has never looked so glamourous. The gleaming black leather gives off a paws-itively stand-out look that screams luxury. This purr-fect design will never go out of style! You might even say that you’ll love it fur-ever. Cats off to you, Brian and THOR! The bidding starts right meow.
You’ll stand up a little straighter with this next purse on your back. The co-founders of Wild Friends are certainly friends, and definitely wild, if you think it’s wild to quit college in pursuit of tastier, healthier peanut butter. But that’s just what Erika Welsh and Keeley Tillotson did and now they delight customers across the nation with delicious, nutritious nut and seed butters. Better still, one percent of their net revenues go to their Women and Girls program to help every woman and girl achieve their dreams. Walk on the wild side with their leopard-print backpack that boasts eye-catching orange and red accents, designed by Colty.
It wouldn’t take a scientist to pinpoint this purse’s appeal. But if you needed one, look no further than Dr. Jennifer Fox, the executive director of the Oregon Translational Research and Development Institute and the Oregon Bioscience Incubator. Jennifer founded both of these to help startup companies develop new medical devices, digital health technology, and wellness products. Using her powers of persuasion, Dr. Fox has leveraged 17 million dollars in state funding into more than 706 million dollars in private, angel, venture capital and grant funding – that’s more than four thousand percent growth! Her tote designed by TAH will have you feeling like a million bucks, with bold red leather making a strong statement, and interior compartments for laptops and shoes let you go from work to travel to play.

This blush pink backpack seems sweet at first glance, with its demure color and shiny brass hardware, but look closer and you’ll find symbolic additions like the Analemma diagram, mapping the sun over the course of a year to create a figure 8, or the crowd of girls shouting into a megaphone. Yes, power and influence sit inside this bag designed by Sum Eram Ero for Senator Sara Gelser, who has been a public servant to Oregon since 2009, specializing in women’s health and wellness, combating child abuse, and being nominated by President Barack Obama to the National Council on Disability.
